Signature of the New European Consensus on Development

A “New European Consensus on Development – Our world, our dignity, our future” has been signed at the European Development Days taking in place in Brussels on June 7 – 8 by the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affaris and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini, the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani and the President of the Council of the European Union Joseph Muscat.

The “New European Consensus on Development” is the EU and Member States joint strategy to eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development. This new EU approach is based on the “five Ps” of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnerships.

Under the new Consensus poverty eradication remains the primary objective of development policy. It underlines the links between development and other policies, such as migration, environment, peace and security. It also integrates the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
