EY has released the report “Empowering women: uncovering financial inclusion barriers” exploring the current landscape, challenges and way forward for the gender impact of the financial inclusion agenda. The report details practical tips and insights gained from interviews with leaders and experts from microfinance institutions, commercial banks involved in microfinance, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, foundations, as well as with EY practice leaders.
The report highlights that financial inclusion is improving the lives of people around the world thanks to the coalescence of multiple factors, such as the advent of mobile technology, the growing awareness of Policy makers of the central importance of access to financial services for economic development, a new interest on the part of traditional financial institutions to serve bottom-of-the pyramid customers, etc. However, much remains to be done to achieve wider financial inclusion especially for women. The report explores the opportunities arising from impact measurement and application of insights from behavioural science.
