Microinsurance Network Launches Global Study on Insurance Delivery Through MFIs

The Microinsurance Network (MIN), in partnership with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), has launched a comprehensive global study examining the opportunities and challenges of delivering inclusive insurance through microfinance institutions (MFIs).

The research aims to better understand how MFIs can act as trusted distribution channels to expand access to insurance for low-income and underserved communities, while identifying barriers and potential solutions within the microinsurance ecosystem. The study seeks to understand how various stakeholders, including donors, regulators, and service providers, can better support MFIs in expanding their insurance offerings.

Study objectives include:

  • Mapping current practices in MFI-delivered insurance products
  • Identifying operational and regulatory challenges facing MFIs
  • Assessing capacity gaps and client demand patterns
  • Analyzing regulatory environments across different markets
  • Exploring opportunities for enhanced collaboration between MFIs and insurance providers
  • Developing recommendations for stakeholder support mechanisms

The research involves a 10-15 minute confidential survey available in English (access HERE), French (access HERE), and Spanish (access HERE). All responses will remain confidential, with results shared only in aggregate form without identifying individual institutions or organizations.

The study represents MIN’s continued effort to strengthen the microinsurance sector by providing evidence-based insights that can inform policy decisions and operational strategies. The findings will contribute to better understanding how microfinance institutions can serve as effective channels for extending insurance coverage to underserved populations. For questions about the study, participants can contact Barbara Magnoni or Shria Ramanathan at EA Consultants.

Results from the study will be made available to the broader microinsurance community to support sector development and best practice sharing.
