e-MFP Hosts Webinar on Disability Inclusive Financial Services

InFiNe member, the European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP), recently hosted a panel discussion on “Disability Inclusive Financial Services: A New Frontier for Inclusive Finance” in collaboration with the Barrier-Free Finance Initiative (BFFI).

Despite significant progress in financial inclusion globally, persons with disabilities (PWDs) remain disproportionately excluded from financial services and financial inclusion strategies. The webinar introduced key disability inclusion concepts applicable to inclusive finance stakeholders and explored the systemic barriers PWDs face in accessing financial services.

The panel featured diverse experts representing different stakeholder perspectives:

  • Roy Mersland (University of Agder) shared research insights on financial inclusion of PWDs
  • Maame Saah Oduro-Frimpong (Bank of Ghana) discussed the role of central banks and regulators in shaping an inclusive financial environment
  • Céline Trublin (Humanity & Inclusion) presented best practice approaches in disability-inclusive financial services
  • Julia Corvalán (Fundación Paraguaya) offered perspectives from a financial service provider committed to disability inclusion

The discussion was moderated by Paul Surreaux and Alison Thornburn, co-founders of the Barrier-Free Finance Initiative, an NGO dedicated to promoting financial inclusion for people with disabilities.

This webinar represents an important step in raising awareness about disability inclusion as a critical dimension of financial inclusion that requires greater attention from practitioners, policymakers, and researchers.
