Microinsurance Network has released a new resource exploring how value-added health services can improve the relevance and impact of inclusive insurance products for underserved communities.
Titled Value-Added Health Services: Lessons from Pioneering Insurers, the publication examines how insurers can go beyond traditional claims-based coverage by integrating practical health support services that better respond to clients’ everyday needs.
For many low-income households, health shocks remain one of the leading causes of financial vulnerability. Insurance can provide critical support, but additional services such as preventive care, medical advice or easier access to treatment can further strengthen resilience.
The report highlights examples of services that may complement health insurance, including:
By integrating such services, insurers can help clients experience more immediate and tangible value from their coverage, rather than only benefiting when a claim occurs. This can support stronger trust, greater customer engagement and improved long-term retention.
For inclusive finance actors, this reflects a broader lesson: financial products are most effective when designed around real-life client needs and everyday resilience.
The publication also underlines the importance of thoughtful implementation. Successful value-added services require clear communication, appropriate partnerships, operational capacity and careful monitoring to ensure quality and affordability.
As Luxembourg continues to position itself as a hub for inclusive finance and impact innovation, this resource offers timely insights into how protection solutions can become more client-centred, practical and impactful.
Inclusive insurance remains a key complement to savings, credit and payments, helping households and entrepreneurs better manage shocks while protecting progress.
