Luxembourg Joins Global Green Growth Institute as 51st Member State

Luxembourg has been officially welcomed as the upcoming 51st Member State of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in a ceremony presided over by H.E. Ban Ki-moon, President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of GGGI.

This membership formalizes a seven-year collaboration that began in 2018 when Luxembourg’s Ministry of Environment, Climate and Biodiversity initiated their first joint project to improve climate resilience in rural Vanuatu. The partnership has since expanded to include projects in Senegal, Vietnam, Rwanda, and support for Small Island Developing States through the SIDS Climate Action Program.

A major achievement of this collaboration has been the 2023 launch of the Global Trust Fund on Sustainable Finance Instruments (GTF), which, in partnership with the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, has mobilized USD 2.1 billion in climate finance in its first two years, supporting projects in 18 countries worldwide.

Finance Minister Gilles Roth emphasized that this membership

“reflects our strong and continued commitment to shaping a sustainable and inclusive global financial system,”

while Minister Serger Wilmes noted the

“remarkable impact in the field of climate and biodiversity action and innovative sustainable finance in some of the most vulnerable countries around the world.”

GGGI established its Luxembourg Office in 2023 at the Luxembourg House of Financial Technologies (LHoFT), where the local team focuses on sustainable finance and carbon pricing initiatives.
